Oswald Schöni erklärt uns in seinem Vortrag, wie die Bewertung der Schweizerischen Orchideen-Gesellschaft funktioniert. In der Bewertung, die sich einmal im Monat im Botanischen Institut in Zürich trifft, sind heute 9 Richter/innen und zwei Helfer. Interessierte für die Jury sind herzlich willkommen. Nach einer guten und erfolgreichen Ausbildungszeit werden sie als vollwertige Richter/innen anerkannt und können im In- und Ausland ihr Können beweisen. Die Schweiz hat das Bewertungssystem der amerikanischen Orchideengesellschaft (AOS) übernommen. Wie ein roter Faden zieht sich das Oncidium microchilum durch den Vortrag. Die Pflanze wird vom Besitzer nach Zürich gebracht oder ein Richter bringt sie mit. Unsere Pflanze geht also ihren Weg für die Tischbewertung. Nach der Anmeldung wird sie vermessen, ihre Blüten werden gezählt und anhand des Farbenatlases wird die Farbe bestimmt. Eine entsprechende Vergleichspflanze wird gesucht. Bis 2007 war dies im Heft 'Awards Quarterly' möglich. Ab 2008 sind alle ausgezeichneten Pflanzen in den USA auf CD erhältlich. Im Heft vom Jahre 2000 werden die Richter fündig. Dort wurde eine Pflanze mit 1220 Blüten vorgestellt, die aber bedeutend kleiner waren als die 140 Blüten unserer Orchidee. Die Richter/innen bewerten daraufhin unabhängig voneinander die Pflanze auf Blütenqualität. Die Orchidee erreicht einen Durchschnitt von 87 Punkten, was eine Silbermedaille bedeutet. Alle ausgezeichneten Pflanzen werden anschliessend fotografiert und zwar mit einer Gesamt- und einer Einzelblütenaufnahme. Die Fotos erscheinen auf der Internetseite der SOG: www.orchideen.ch unter der Rubrik 'Bewertung'. An Ausstellungen findet auch eine Standbewertung statt. Zum Beispiel an der legendären Ausstellung zum 25-jährigen Jubiläum des Berner Orchideenvereins von 1993 im Kornhaus Bern. Der berühmte Karikaturist 'Scapa' hält die Ausstellung mit dem Spruch '…natürlich regnet es im Regenwald, du Besserwisser' fest. Unser Mitglied Arnold Wittwer hat mit seiner Bleistiftzeichnung 'Alle wollen unseren Regenwald sehen' das Seine dazu beigetragen. Bewertet werden die Ausstellungsstände nach folgenden Punkten:
1. Gesamteindruck
2. Präsentation und Kennzeichnung
3. Sorgfalt im Einzelnen
4. Pflanzen- und Blütenqualität
5. Vielfalt der Orchideen
An der letzten Int. Ausstellung 2013 in der Schweiz in Winterthur erzielte die 'Stadt Grün' Zürich (Stadtgärtnerei) als einzige für ihren Stand eine Goldmedaille. Die Latte ist also sehr hoch gesetzt. Unser nachgeahmter 'Alte Bärengraben' von Bern wurde mit Silber belohnt. Bewertet werden auch die Orchideen in den Ständen. Der Teamleader jeder Bewertungsgruppe (z.B. Vandeen und Verwandte) bestimmt mit seinen Mitgliedern die auszeichnungswürdigen Pflanzen. Zum Abschluss, meist zu später Stunde, werden drei Champions bestimmt, nämlich der Champion für die beste Naturform, für die beste Hybride und der Champion der Ausstellung. In Winterthur wurde die Paraphalaenopsis labukensis von unserem Mitglied Hanspeter Gerber als beste Naturform ausgezeichnet. Es können auch Sonderpreise vergeben werden. An der Ausstellung in Bern wurde die Präsentation der Ikebana-Kultur ausgezeichnet. Zum Abschluss des Vortrages zeigt uns Oswald noch einige Bilder aus seinem Gewächshaus und seiner Orchideenkultur.
